Saving
Makes Cents School Program
Saving Makes “Cents” is a school banking program
run by State Treasurer Cahill’s Financial
Education Department. Over the years, NCFCU has
built a relationship with Treasurer Cahill’s
staff and the Freeman Centennial and H. Olive
Day school staff by offering the program in 2001
to the SACC students and then in 2005 as an
after school class for students who enroll.
The children learn basic monetary concepts,
including how to open a savings account, the
importance of setting goals and saving to reach
those goals. Upon completion of the course, each
child is presented with a personalized
Certificate of Achievement and awarded $10
towards opening a savings account with the
credit union.
Susan Kenney, NCFCU Manager, is very pleased
with the success of the program. “The student
banking program is one of the credit union’s
priorities and we are committed to offering the
program for many years to come. Financial
literacy and establishing a saving habit is a
goal that we work diligently to achieve, one
school at a time. We are serious about getting
children to save money so we give them $10 of
play money to turn into real money and deposit
into their new savings account. The credit union
staff is excited when the students come in to
conduct business on their accounts. It’s proof
that our effort to encourage the students to
save money pays off.”
National Credit Union “Youth Week”
Each year during the April school vacation
break, NCFCU celebrates “Youth Week”. Beginning
in 2004, the credit union has held this yearly
celebration completely free to the public. The
annual celebration is packed with fun and
excitement geared towards making saving easy and
fun for the children. They participate in making
crafts and planting seeds to watch them grow
like their savings. Each child receives a favor
bag and everyone who attends is eligible to win
the many prizes given away at the conclusion of
the event.
2011 Youth
Week
For
the seventh year, Norfolk Community Federal Credit
Union celebrated National Credit Union Youth
Week. The theme this year was “Money Rock$ At My
Credit Union”. The public was invited to a free
three day celebration during spring school
vacation week. The credit union’s goal is
financial education, including preparing our
young people for the financial challenges they
will meet as they grow and mature. Our
commitment to serve our younger members reflects
our belief that financial education has the
greatest impact on young people when basics such
as money management, saving and investing and
wise use of credit are taught early.
Youth Week highlights how young people earn,
spend, save, and manage their own money. Norfolk
Credit Union encouraged the children to open
accounts and begin saving by offering the
children free giveaways. Each time a child
deposited money they were entered into a drawing
for a WII Guitar Hero Game and Guitar. Savings
goal was $1,500 and the children saved $2,300
over the three day event. Each child that
attended Youth Week was also automatically
entered into a raffle to win a Karaoke Machine.
The Youth Week festivities included many fun
activities and favor bags for the children. In
keeping with the “Money Rock$ At My Credit
Union” theme the Guitar Hero guitar was used to
track the children’s savings totals by marking
their progress on the frets towards the top of
the guitar. They made and decorated tambourines
and maracas to keep with the musical “Rock$”
theme. They also enjoyed
planting sunflower using pots
and soil donated by Walsh’s Greenhouse. Tickets
were given to the children who participated in
the activities to register for the prizes.
